Shani Crayton

Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing at ASU

Shani Crayton began her role as Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing at Alabama State University in February 2024, where she oversees the university’s brand and public image. Leading a dynamic team, she creates strategic campaigns that highlight ASU’s rich legacy while positioning it as a forward-thinking institution that empowers students. Though proud of her Emmy nominations and the awards she earned for producing documentaries, as well as being recognized as one of Alabama State University’s 50 Under 50, Crayton views these as steppingstones toward greater achievements. She is deeply involved in her community, mentoring young women pursuing careers in marketing and communications, with a focus on helping them access the opportunities they need to thrive.

  • Key to Success: My key to success is consistency and authenticity. In every step of my journey, I’ve remained true to who I am while being committed to excellence. I’ve learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to always show up prepared, even when it’s uncomfortable. And, of course, surrounding myself with a strong support system of mentors, family and colleagues has been instrumental in my success.
  • Guilty Pleasure: Embracing my love for adventure. Some might call it childish, but I absolutely enjoy the thrill of amusement parks with heart-pounding rides that make my stomach drop, or a lively state fair with all the delicious fair food. Unfortunately, I don’t get to indulge in these as often as I’d like, but when I do, it’s pure joy.
  • High School Superlative: I was voted “Most School Spirit” in high school, which feels so fitting now. That same energy drives me today as a proud champion for my alma mater.
  • Childhood Aspirations: As a child, I dreamed of being a U.S. Marshal with the Fugitive Recovery Task Force. It’s quite a shift from my current role as Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, but I’ve found similarities in both paths strategic thinking, adaptability and a commitment to making an impact.
  • First Job: I began my career as a part-time editor at WSFA 12 News, a role that served as the foundation for my journey into journalism and communications.
  • Best Advice: “Bloom where you’re planted.” It reminds me that success isn’t always about chasing the next big thing but about making the most of where you are and turning opportunities into stepping stones for growth.
  • Biggest Influence Personally & Professionally: The biggest influence on my career growth has been my late father. He taught me the value of hard work, faith and perseverance. Watching him navigate life with grace and determination inspires me every day. Professionally, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who challenged me to dream bigger and push beyond what I thought was possible. Their guidance has shaped me into the leader I am today.
